SILVANA BUTTERA
born in 1945, lives in Rodda di Pulfero (UD), Italy.
Silvana Buttera began carving in the 90s, using makeshift tools and greatest self-confidence. In the coming years, she improved her technique, so her “devils” of the Natisone Valleys’ tradition of “Pust” are now highly appreciated and imitated.
Her subjects are deeply affected by the local culture of “Benecia”. She is also inspired by the woods on the mountains she is living and working in.
She was the co-founder of the association “Mascherai Alpini” and the first woman operating in the field of traditional Carnival wooden masks.
She mainly uses Lime Tree wood for carving her masks and prepares it using a particular technique.
